March Wednesday round up

This week I've done some tidying, not least straightening a pile of records and while I was at it removing any that were worn and to which had been replaced and been for a number of walks.
That's beside doing some colouring after having my covid jab at the weekend  and chatted with someone else at Tumblr for while.
Millicent Bunny is the guardian of my stairs - yes really - making sure nothing happens that could be painful in her dress with frilly bits on.

I've had her for over fifteen year where I spotted her on a craft store loving her appearance although she does weigh quite a bit which you soon notice picking her up to vacuum the carpet so perhaps she oughta be on a diet?

I should be studying this weekend unless anything happens in the meantime which should be fun as I believe Math is in this week coming.

Pasts memories and revelations

It is warmer if a little breezy as I type this entry out after morning playtime where this weeks Beano has already arrived ready for me to read, laughing my socks off but there was related post that probably wouldn't work on the main blog.

You see Minnie as anyone who ever really read that blog would understand was the cartoon heroine of mine, tomboyish, tends to get in trouble, sometimes defiant but full of spirit that nothing can ever crush.

It isn't uncommon for a cartoon strip to mirror the world of the reader and for many of us television shows where you would write in asking to do, see or meet people that would otherwise be 'in your dreams' were things we watched.

In the era I lived, one such show was "Jim'll Fix It" shown on Saturday tea times on BBC1 which boys and girls often did, sometimes for them and their friends other times perhaps for others who they felt would appreciate such a gesture.

What that strip in the short lived A5 extended story strip Beano Comic Library alludes to is because of the sheer number of requests we would feel the need to go to great lengths for our request to stand out, have our moment of fame amongst our friends and meet the presenter.

Minnie in the whole strip did tons of things to do to get on the show such was the allure and much the same applies even today to getting otherwise difficult to get access and that has it's risks even though protocols involving children and vulnerable people are much better than they were.

As you'd expect of someone who worked in the field in this country I am sadly only too well aware of the allegations widely held to be true regarding that shows host regarding historic abuse not defending for a split second his actions.

I do have to be honest however and say it the show had us transfixed and we all loved it being a memory in our childhood we adored which like a few others was been tainted by things we leaned about much later on.

To me you can hold on what you loved about the show without condoning all that came out decades later.

Your childhood memories are just that. The memories of the time you recall.

Vent time

It's warmed up no end this week which I'm pretty pleased about as last week I was frozen to the bone during the day and felt like I'd been trapped in a freezer overnight despite having almost as much on as I might if I was going hill climbing.

I wasn't in the best of places yesterday as The Grump had gone out shopping but totally forgot to check he'd taking his credit card so while he had some money to pay for stuff, bits had to go back.

He phoned me but just as I am listening with little short term memory to the point I can't tell you what I said seconds ago, her momminess tries to start a second conversation when I struggle to stay in just one and look for where he'd put it usually one of his many coats more often than not.

That's not help by her getting confused so no we have two conversations to track with little memory which such a struggle I get super stressed out over it and lose half a day as I'm now utterly stressed out and with a big headache.

Sometimes you feel you've had enough.

Recalling the past

Sometimes you hear people say "You'll grow up to be your mother" rather ignoring the extent to which we mirror them from our earliest years where we dress at times in matching ways, spend time learning directly about our roles and what we need know to be good at them, outwitting men 3-1 for good measure.

For many of us we'd willing spend a day with our moms or aunts being so close to each other emotionally with a most real bond which for me include not just shopping together but baking and making things out of scraps.

Wasn't that just what we loved back then?

The Cane

Life can seem a bit odd when it is that some high school children in the era of corporal punishment were moved to protest it.
Yet others held counter demonstrations supporting it fearing that standards would drop and the school corridors would be a no go area for any kid who was just that bit different.

Personally I felt it only impacted on those who would of incurred some other sanction that might of dragged things out and it wasn't that most of us didn't get spanked cos over 90% of us then did at home or at other family members places especially for reported bad behaviour or poor school reports.

Perhaps then it's no so much of a coincidence that in this life of mine somethings remain.
I'm usually relieved to be informed I'm in for the spanking or six of the best simply because as painful as it is, the situation and I have been corrected and it's all over with feeling the cane teasing my bottom before it makes it's decisive impact.

Wednesday media round up

There's a few things I'd like to talk about before my next entry sometime next week and I think the first thing is I enjoy light hearted social interaction, it may be a laugh and a joke on a Status update, a journal or say in a chat room.

This week I've been thinking back to my past and the things that were in them  and one thing that certainly was were comics.

Most of the popular comics we had tended to show more co-ed education because I guess they were more for both sexes and that was easier but outside the toppling duo of the Dandy and Beano you moved more into the world I felt more at one with, the girls only comic.

The staple of them was typically at least one all girls boarding school story but Judy had an interesting story of a world where you might be the only Girl admitted to what was a boys school perhaps because it may of been more convenient for your parents.

Just how might such a world of worked out when came to things like team sports given boys schools always did Rugby, Association Football and Cricket.

Could you imagine being in a rugby scrum with a load boys all pushing and shoving trying to get that ball off you?

These kinds of things intrigue me as much as in some ways I 'trailblazed' some changes in real life school and work settings when I'd been very much in the minority.

It's a bit like how in Scouts over here in time it's gone co-ed requiring thought about how to run activities such as Camp.

Bedtime

The battle for sleep has always been there regardless of generation and with each generation of parents holding some part of popular culture responsible for that reluctance to get to bed and having got there, to stay asleep.

It's quite possible that with the reduction at least over here of house sizes, there has been more of a push for many children's toys and effects to be moved into the bedroom so in some ways it becomes an entertainments room that you sleep in so that you're getting that switch off you did when we were "It's time for a bath and bed" even if things may of been harder and perhaps you shared a bed as well as the room with at least one other sibling.

I grew up with blankets in what was our icicle covered window in the winter bedroom whose amounts were regulated to the season and being expected having being given a pile of them to make owns one bed.

If that wasn't enough then that handiwork would be inspected apart from the general state of your room and your behind would know it if indeed it was a state.

Sometimes I do miss that ability to tailor the bed linen to the weather being the sort who gets warm very quickly rather than having all or nothing.
